On Thursday evening 17 July 2025 the 1500m Byrne Cup was held in Morton Stadium, Santry. To accommodate the 38 athletes three races were held in ideal weather conditions.
Gerry Deegan, the race starter for the night, got the first race underway at 8pm. Taking the lead for start to finish was an inform Ray Dunne finishing in 0:04:45. In second place was Brian Martin with a time of 0:04:50. Eoin Rafter was third in 0:05:12. Aisling Andrews had the fastest ladies time of the night 0:05:20 in sixth place.
In the second race an inform Jerry O’Sullivan set the early pace which he maintained coming home in first place in 0:05:25. Diarmuid Doyle ran a solid race in second with a time of 0:05:38 with third place going to an inform Paula Prunty in 0:05:43.
In the final race of the night Tom Monks was the dominant runner coming home first in 0:06:16. In second place was Declan Murray in 0:06:23. While in third place was Ciara O’Regan posting a time of 0:06:31.
Grand Prix result
The 1500m races provided great excitement and competition on the night. When the Grand Prix result was completed the winner on the night was the ever-popular Brid Beausang. A delighted Brid was presented with the Byrne Cup. In second place was Catherine Dempsey and in third was Diarmuid Doyle.

Mary Deegan RIP
At the post-race presentation, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Mary Deegan (nee Murray), the mother of our fellow Conliffe Harrier, Gerry Deegan. Sadly, Gerry’s mother passed away last Wednesday. As colleagues would know Gerry had returned from Los Angeles for several weeks to care for his Mum. Gerry was a frequent visitor to the club during that time and took part in some GP races in addition to coaching and officiating. Gerry’s mum was founder member of the Ladies Section of Clonliffe Harriers back in the 1960s. Mary was one of the famous Morton Marvels.
Gerry started all three 1500m Byrne Cup races in memory of his Mum.
All in Clonliffe Harriers extend their deepest condolences to Gerry and the extended Deegan Family at this sad time.
