Fittingly for the week that’s in it, Hannah Segrave on Sunday afternoon became Clonliffe Harriers first ever National women’s indoor 800 champion. Not only that but, becomes the first Clonliffe women’s 800 champion, indoor or outdoor, for 51 years. The last Clonliffe woman to win a national 800 was Padraigin O’Dwyer, outdoors, back in 1975. That was Padraigin’s 2nd National 800 title. Other previous Clonliffe women to win the national 800 were Ann O’Brien, on 3 occasions, and Olympian Claire Walsh.
Post race on Sunday, Women in Sports Officer, Sarah Bateson caught up with Hannah (interview below), interestingly Hannah tags two athletes as her influence when she was a young athlete – Melissa Bishop (CAN) and Lynsey Sharp (GBR) both of whom have competed at Morton Games as as indeed has Hannah herself, before joining Clonliffe Harriers. Undoubtedly Hannah is a brilliant role model for any up and coming young female Clonliffe Harrier. Who knows maybe in years to come one of these young Clonliffe athletes may well tag Hannah Segrave as her inspiration.
