Clonliffe Harriers would like to pay tribute to one of the club’s most highly decorated athletes, Brian Gregan, who in recent weeks has announced his retirement from competitive athletics after an athletics career lasting some 20 years.
Internationally Brian was the 2011 European U/23 400 silver medallist. He competed over a12 year plus international career always representing Ireland with distinction, with international vests in the European Championships in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016. His best finish was a 6th place finish in the 2012 400 final in Helsinki. At the European indoors he completed on 3 occasions, 2011, 2013 and 2017. He has also competed 3 times at the world Championships, 2013, 2015 and 2017 and twice at the world indoors, 2010 and his last in Belgrade in 2022. Brian over the course of his international career took 4 wins for Ireland in the European team Championships, 3 times over 400 and once as a member of the 4 x 400 team.
Brian is a 9 time senior national champion. He won 5 national 400s over a period from 2009 to 2017 and 4 indoor titles, 3 over 400 and once at 200. When fit he always made himself available to compete for the club in the National League playing a pivotal role in the club’s successes in this competition in the period 2010-2015, competing at times over both 200 and 400 and indeed 4 x 400 relay. He held the club record over 200 and 400, both indoor and outdoor, indeed his 2013 indoor 400 mark of 46.07 and 2017 400 of 45.26 are the current Clonliffe Harriers club records. That 2017 record is particularly significant as it was set in that year’s Morton Games when Brian won the Loki Sports 400 over a top-class international field and in the process revived the famous ‘Santry Roar’!
Like most things in life, when one door closes, another opens. Clonliffe Harriers are delighted that Brian has now taken up a coaching role with the club and will work with his long-time coach John Shields’ group. The club would like to congratulate Brian on a superb athletics career and we wish him continued success in his new role with Clonliffe Harriers.
