The National U/20 & U/23 Championships Tullamore, July 4th and 5th . Day 1 report by Michelle Lynch: First on the track was Emily Jachna in heat 3 of the u20 women’s 100m. 12.80 got her a small q and a place in the finals. A further improvement in the final saw a time of 12.78 and 7th place.
Next up was were the 4 Clonliffe men in the u23 100m. 4 heats in this event meant only the winner was guaranteed a place in the final with the final 4 places going to the 4 fastest non automatic qualifiers.
Bilal Kanimodo took 2nd place in heat 1 with a time of 10.86 and a place in the final.
Brandon Muchini was next up for Clonliffe in Heat 2 but unfortunately his time of 11.18 wasn’t enough to see him proceed to the final.
Luca Logue-Fonseca took 1st place in heat 3 with a time of 11.00 and automatic qualification.
Adam Festus got second place in heat 4 with a time of 11.83 which unfortunately wasn’t enough to see him through to the finals.
The men’s 100m final saw a field of 8 very closely matched athletes fighting it out and all of them running under 11 seconds. Luca Logue-Fonseca finished in 5th place with a time of 10.87 and Bilal Kanimodo was right on his shoulder in 7th place with a time of 10.90 seconds.
Next up was the u20 men’s 400m where 5 heats meant qualification for the finals was based on the winner from each heat plus the 4 fastest. In heat 2, Findlay McGill finished in 2nd place with a time of 50.48 and a place in the final booked.
The final saw Findlay run a valiant race and narrowly missing out on a medal with a time of 50.40 in 4th place
U23 men’s 400m had Christopher Lynch finish 3rd in heat 3 with a time of 50.85 and automatic qualification into the final.
The final was a race of two halves with the first 4 all clocking times under 48 seconds and Christopher achieving a PB of 47.97 to finish in 4th place.
In the field events, Ethan Thompson threw a superb 53.67m achieving a new PB and earning himself a Bronze medal in the U20 Men Hammer Throw (6Kg). In the same event, Dylan Jones finished in 5th place with a throw of 49.29.
In all, we had 5 athletes representing Clonliffe Harriers achieve a place in the National Finals and a Bronze medal for Ethan in the Hammer Throw.
