Shane Rooney reports on last weekend’s event: The Donadea World Marathon and Half Marathon got the marathon running year off to a memorable start with a superb event set in the picturesque surroundings of Donadea Forest Park. While runners were greeted by a bitterly cold start, it wasn’t long before bodies warmed up and legs found their rhythm as the runners from Clonliffe settled into the familiar 5km looped course.
The forest provided a stunning backdrop, though the conditions added an extra layer of challenge. Icy patches on parts of the route demanded focus and careful footing, testing both balance and resilience. Credit is due to all participants for navigating the conditions with determination and good spirits.
Clonliffe Harriers were out in force, with over 30 athletes taking part across the marathon and half marathon distances. There were many standout performances throughout the day, reflecting the depth of strength and preparation within the club.
At the marathon distance, David Murphy delivered an outstanding run to take the overall victory, a fantastic achievement to kick off the new year. Anne Lyons also impressed, finishing as second lady home and continuing her strong form over the distance.
In the half marathon, Stephen McCann led the Clonliffe charge, finishing as the first club athlete home in an excellent 8th place overall and was quickly followed by Eoin Rafter and Dara Peyton, with Maura Matthews being the the first Clonliffe lady home. The races saw a series of strong Clonliffe performances in the half marathon, see results attached.
Despite the cold and the tricky underfoot conditions, the event was a great success and a thoroughly enjoyable way to begin 2026. A strong turnout, great performances, and a testing but rewarding course made for a memorable day. A special thanks to Pam, Kev, and Tim.
Onwards and upwards for the year ahead.
