Connolly takes Middlesex Cup

This year’s Middlesex Cup 5000m on Thursday the 25th attracted a large field of 51 runners and two separate races were held. The races were run in glorious sunshine, with the recent heat wave adding to the intensity of the evening and testing competitors throughout the field.

5000m Race 1 – Winner Fran McEntee

29 runners took part in this race and were set on their way by Maurice Ahern. From the outset Fran McEntee took the lead which he maintained throughout finishing first in a time of 0:20:47. In second place was Emma Przymusinska having her first run on the Morton track, posting a time of 0:21:01. In third place was Joyce O’Hare completing the 12 ½ laps in 0:21:25.

5000m Race 2 – Winner Sean Doran

22 runners competed in this second race. Thankfully, the temperature had dropped slightly compared to the conditions experienced in the first race. Sean Doran took the lead from the start. Sean ran at a consistent pace throughout the race to finish first in a time of 0:16:14, the fastest time of the night. Matt Glitz had a fine run coming in second in a time of 0:16:50. Said Abdiwahab produced a strong performance to finish third in 0:16:52.

Grand Prix Result – Winner David Connolly

Those who competed in last year’s Middlesex Cup will recall that the wind played a  big factor and militated against achieving PBs on the night. What a contrast this year with extremely high temperatures providing a different type of challenge. Nevertheless, runners were able to master the conditions with the assistance of a welcome water station.

The winner of the Middlesex Cup this year was David Connolly who had a wonderful run in the warm conditions posting a time of 0:17:35. In second place, having an equally fine run was Brian O’Reilly in a time of 0:18:37. In third place was Ray Dunne having a strong run and posting a time of 0:17:10.

  1. David Connolly – 66 points
  2. Brian O’Reilly – 65 points
  3. Ray Dunne – 64 points
