It has been a fantastic week for our Clonliffe athletes proudly representing Ireland at the Masters World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, with some outstanding performances on the world stage.
Edel Maguire (W65) has had an outstanding championships, winning her 100m heat in 14.82 before taking 3rd in the 100m final in 14.51 (-0.5). She then won her 200m semi-final in 30.82 before claiming 2nd in the final in 29.86 (-0.1). Edel also won the W65 High Jump with a 1.36m clearance, a season’s best. Even more impressively, all three of these performances — 100m, 200m and High Jump — were All-Ireland W65 Records. Edel now turns her attention to the 400m, with her semi-final on Tuesday. Should she progress, the 400m final will take place on Wednesday. We wish her the very best of luck.
Christopher Xolile Sibanda (M35) has had a very strong championships, winning his 100m heat in 10.96, finishing 2nd in his semi-final in 10.83 and taking 4th in the final in 10.82. In the 200m, Chris again won his heat in 22.39, finished 2nd in the semi-final in 22.10 and placed 5th in the final in 22.46.
Snezana Bechtina (W40) had a strong run in her 100m heat, finishing 3rd in 13.08. Unfortunately, only the top two from each heat progressed to the final, regardless of time, meaning Snezana’s time was faster than some athletes who made the final. In the 200m, she finished 3rd in her semi-final in 26.58 before finishing 6th in the final in 26.63.
