Race Report – 1500m Byrne Cup – Clonliffe Harriers Grand Prix 2026 Series
On Thursday evening 16 July 2026 the 1500m Byrne Cup was held in Morton Stadium, Santry. Too accommodate the 48 athletes three races were held in glorious sunny weather. The race starter for the night was Maurice Ahern.
Race 1 – 8.00pm
This first 1500m of the evening had the biggest field, some 19 runners. This race had the fastest time of the night this was shared by two guests Cian Murray and Siad Addiwahab Muhudin, first and second respectively. In an electrifying finish down the home straight Cian got the nod on the line. Mark Glitx put in a strong performance finishing in 4.19. Mohamoud Hushi (guest) was timed at 4.24. Niall Shelock ran a strong race coming fifth in 4.38. The following all come in under 5 minutes; Ray Dunne 4.43, David Connolly 4.54, Dave Dunwoody 4.56 and Brian O’Reilly 4.57.
Race 2 – 8.10pm
Sixteen athletes competed in this second 1500m. This was an equally exciting race. Cara Compos rang a stormer finishing first in 5.15. Aisling Andrews pushed hard in pursuit in a PB of 5.17. Emma Przymusinska followed closely behind to take third in 5.20. The following three athletes all got under 5.30, Philip Matthews 5.28, Liam Ward 5.28 and Shane Rooney 5.29.
Race 3 – 8.20pm
In the final race of the evening thirteen athletes competed. Peigi Allen surged to victory in the 1500m with an impressive 5:41, setting the pace from the front and holding strong to the finish. Behind her, Peter Cahill battled hard to claim second in 5:53, with Philip Richards close on his heels in third at 6:00. The fight for the remaining places was tightly contested, as Dave Reilly crossed in 6:03 for fourth, followed closely by Siobhan McCarthy in 6:08. Fionnuala Smith rounded out the field in 6:09.

Grand Prix Result – Peter Cahill wins Byrne Cup
The winner of the 1500m Grand Prix Byrne Cup was Peter Cahill. Peter put in an exceptionally strong performance, in the third race, to claim the top points. In second place was Dave Comiskey who competed strongly in the first race. In third place also in the first race was Dave Dunwoody. Congratulation to all three.
